VICTIM ADVOCACY

What is Victim Advocacy?

Victim Advocacy services are an essential part of a Child Advocacy Center’s work in serving child victims of abuse and their non-offending caregivers. As a child and family come into our Center they are greeted by our Victim Advocate and then shown to our family room. While the child is speaking with our Forensic Interviewer, the Victim Advocate stays in the family room to provide support, information, and referrals to the non-offending caregiver and the rest of the family. This includes information on victims’ rights, the court process, and investigative process, as well as referrals to mental health agencies, medical services, and community programs.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON VICTIM ADVOCACY

Families first encounter our Victim Advocate when they come into our Center for services, but their support does not stop there. Following the forensic interview process our Victim Advocate stays in contact with the family through the court process to provide them with additional support, referrals, information, and case updates. Victim Advocates must complete specialized training in victim advocacy required by the National Children’s Alliance standards for accreditation.
